For IT professionals looking to take the next step in their careers by pursuing cloud computing, there are several steps you should take in order to achieve success. Cloud computing, after all, can be an intimidating subject, as it involves learning new skills and new tools alongside mastering old ones. But don’t let this stop you from pursuing your cloud dreams! Here are eight tips that will help you succeed with cloud computing training, whatever your career goals may be.

1) Understand What You’re Learning

Whether you’re brand new to cloud computing or a seasoned veteran, understand what it is that you’re learning. This will help clarify your thought process, and make a more informed decision about which method of learning works best for you. If you already have experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), focus on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) by diving into GCP technology stacks, migration guides and other resources created by Google; similarly, if you’re well versed in Microsoft Azure features/tools/features focus on AWS. There are also plenty of resources available from third-party sources like media outlets like TechTarget or CIO Magazine as well as through blogs run by cloud software providers themselves.

2) Keep an Open Mind

When learning about cloud computing, it’s important to keep an open mind. The technology changes rapidly, so any rules you read in a book or online are likely to be out of date by tomorrow but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take advantage of resources like these. At its core, cloud computing is a new way of looking at your IT needs: Instead of paying up front for dedicated servers and hosting space, you pay only for what you use.

3) Know When to Seek Help

While it may be tempting to try and learn everything there is to know about cloud computing yourself, in many cases doing so is an inefficient use of your time. Luckily, there are a number of resources you can turn to if you’re looking for help or have questions and yes, these resources extend beyond friends and family.

4) Define Your Goals in Detail

Make sure your training is relevant and that you’re prepared to enter your cloud computing position by defining your goals in detail. If you know exactly what type of job you want, chances are higher that you’ll succeed once you start working. Think about what skills will be most valuable to employers and make sure they’re reflected in both your resume and interview answers. Research those skill sets by familiarizing yourself with how cloud computing works.

5) Get Hands On Experience

Get your hands dirty with cloud computing technologies by developing a proof-of-concept or short demo app. This is a great way to make sure you’re actually interested in working with cloud technologies, and will help you gain experience that’s applicable on your resume.

6) Practice Under Real World Conditions

Before you sign up for a cloud computing training course, make sure you know exactly what will be taught. Take some time to become familiar with cloud computing technology and then choose a training program that lets you learn via hands-on experience with real world systems and applications. An effective trainer will always be able to demonstrate his or her knowledge not only by explaining how things work but also by offering specific examples of when and how they should be used in practice.

7) Incorporate Lifelong Learning into Your Career Planning

No one can know everything there is to know about business and technology. Over time, it’s important to seek out new training as changes occur in technology and your industry. A commitment to lifelong learning will not only improve your career opportunities, but it will also make you a more valuable employee or consultant.

8) Expect Change – Especially From Yourself

It’s easy to get comfortable in your job, but if you want to succeed in today’s tech industry, it’s important to be willing to change. Constant learning and adapting are critical. This is especially true of cloud computing technology especially since advances in cloud services and offerings occur at such a rapid pace. Failing to keep up with these changes can severely limit your opportunities. So, don’t just expect change; embrace it!
