(CNN Spanish) —  Approximately 70 countries change their time for these dates: winter, if they are in the northern hemisphere, or summer, if they are in the southern hemisphere. Many countries near the equator do not adjust their clocks at any time of the year.

If you are in a country with a time change in the northern hemisphere, around these dates you should set your clock back one hour. Around March or April you should advance it an hour.

If you are in the southern hemisphere (and if your country has a time change) it would be the opposite.

In general, these measures seek to optimize energy use, although several countries have been repealing them and every year debates arise in those countries that still maintain them.

Time change in the United States

On November 7, the time changes in the United States. Hawaii, most of Arizona, or the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa do not change time .

The winter time will be maintained until March 13, 2022, when the daylight saving time begins again.

The idea of daylight saving time in the US was conceived in 1784 by Benjamin Franklin and has undergone several changes since then, according to data compiled by CNN.

In 1919 it was repealed, but it was still recognized in some areas of the country. In 1966, the Uniform Time Act established the uniform daylight saving time system in the US, from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October, but states could opt out of participating.

Between 1974 and 1975, Congress extended daylight saving time to save energy during the energy crisis. And between 1986 and 2006, it was set to start on the first Sunday in April and end on the last Sunday in October, according to CNN’s compilation.

But since 2007, with the George W. Bush Energy Policy Act, daylight saving time in the United States begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

Time change in Mexico

If you are in Mexico, the time change begins on Sunday, October 31. This, except for the states of Quintana Roo and Sonora.

In case you live in the northern border states, your time will change at the same time as in the US.

South America

Chile and Paraguay are the only countries in South America that continue to maintain the time change in force throughout their territory.

Chile switched to summer time on September 4 and Paraguay on October 3.

Although they have implemented it before, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil currently have the time change canceled. They will not have to set the time.

Likewise, although at some specific moments in history the governments implemented it, if you are in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru or Bolivia, you do not change the schedule either.

Central America

Although on occasions some Central American countries used summer time, currently none have the measure in force.

This means that if you live in Guatemala , Belize, Honduras, El Salvador , Nicaragua, Costa Rica or Panama , you will not have to adjust your clock.

In 2018, the European Commission proposed to eliminate the time change . However, the decision is not yet made.

Therefore, if you are in Spain or another country of the European Union, on Sunday, October 31 at 2 am, the clock will go back one hour.
